You’ve probably spent a lot of time and resources maintaining your landscaping. The last thing you want is pests undoing all the work. In today’s post, local landscaper Sherwood Gardens shares tips on how to keep pests at bay while maintaining a beautiful exterior.
Most people would be familiar with organic mulch, which is usually made of wood chips, straw or recycled paper, among others. Certain types of organic mulch can attract pests. For example mulch made from wood chips can attract termites and carpenter ants, while those that retain much moisture can attract roaches, mice and mosquitoes.
Synthetic mulch, on the other hand, can be made from recycled rubber, plastic or other inorganic materials. While they do not have pest-repellent properties, they don’t attract them either. If you’re concerned about its environmental impact, your local landscaping contractor can help you choose the right type of synthetic mulch.
If your garden has water features like ponds or birdbaths, make it a point to replace the water at least once a week, if not more often. Standing water can become a home to various kinds of insects and aid in their breeding. Mosquitoes are known to lay their eggs in standing water. These eggs can turn into larvae in as quickly as a week. Running water can help prevent insects from making their homes around these areas. Also, consider stocking your pond with insect-eating fish.
Branches that touch the roof can give ants and rodents access to the roof and walls. When planting a new tree near the house, consider the mature plant. In addition to making sure the roots won’t damage the house foundations, you should also consider how close it will be to the house when fully grown. If you already have trees growing in your yard, make sure the branches closest to the roof are trimmed. A 10-foot clearance should be enough to keep pests away from the roofing surface. It can also help prevent damage to the roof caused by sharp branches.
