Spring is a time for clear, sunny skies and warm temperatures. It’s also a perfect time to do some needed cleaning around your home, hence the term “spring cleaning”. If you’re planning to start spring cleaning your home’s landscape, it can be overwhelming, especially if you don’t know where to start. 1. Patio and Pathways – The patios and pathways of your home’s landscape should be cleaned and spruced up so they’ll be more presentable, especially if you’re planning to have some guests over. If you have plastic or metal patio furniture, clean them with a mild mix of dish liquid soap and warm water in a bucket, then rinse it down with a garden hose.

Make sure to scrub any mildew off your patio deck. Any moisture trapped beneath the planters can encourage mold growth. Use a cleaning solution consisting of two cups of liquid chlorine bleach mixed with two and a half tablespoons of powdered laundry detergent in one and a half quarts of warm water. Once the deck has been scrubbed, rinse it all down thoroughly with a garden hose.

2. Lawn – Inspect your yard for any spots that need sprucing. For instance, if one area of your lawn is ruined due to foot traffic and pets, simply sprinkle that area with some grass seed and fertilizer. Remember to keep the dirt moist until grass grows in the affected area.

Make sure to clean up any fallen twigs and branches in your lawn, and rake the leaves once the lawn is completely dry. Using your collected leaves and branches as the foundation for a compost pile is a much better idea than simply bagging them up.

3. Garden Beds – Make sure you clear your garden beds of fallen leaves, weeds, and dead foliage. This is so your flowers will have more room to grow and bloom when spring is in full swing. When the soil has completely thawed out, you can start by raking the fallen leaves and digging up dead plants.

If you’re planning to add more plants this time around, you can use a tiller to break new ground. But if you want a bigger statement for your home’s landscape, hire your locally trusted landscaper to build a raised garden bed. In early spring, start planting trees, shrubs, and hardy perennial plants such as geraniums and bleeding-heart flowers.

4. Trees, Shrubs, and Perennials – To give a more solid foundation for your plants, make sure you clip away diseased, dying or dead branches. Cut back branches that are encroaching on walkways around your landscape so they won’t get broken off accidentally, especially during the spring and summer months.

You must remember that different plants shouldn’t be treated the same. For instance, if you have semi-woody perennial plants such as Russian sage and butterfly bushes, cut them back to about four inches tall. If you have ornamental grasses, tie the tops for easier cutting, then snip them as close to the ground as possible.
